Not quite a New Urbanism project, but something of great importance for the City of Atlanta is the Wireless Atlanta initiative. The initiative was launched by the City of Atlanta to partner with a service provider to deploy a citywide wireless broadband network called the “muni wifi” program. Wireless Atlanta will offer residents, visitors, and businesses the ability to access the Internet anytime and anywhere within the city and is expected to be deployed in 2008.

Construction Scheduled at Atlanta’s First Spa-Inspired High-rise
ATLANTA (October 17, 2006) - Tivoli Properties, Inc. (Tivoli) and Kennedy Capital Group, LLC will break ground in early November on Mezzo: a 20-story luxury condominium development located at the cusp of Midtown and Buckhead. The boutique condominium will include 94 homes plus approximately 3,000-square-feet of street-level retail shopping facing Peachtree Road. Slated to open in the spring of 2008, Mezzo will feature spacious one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes as well as penthouses.

According to a study conducted by Cousins Properties - one of the country’s top diversified development companies - Atlanta’s population should reach 808,000 by 2020. While the population is 470,688 - based on the census estimate released in July 2005 (Wikipedia: Atlanta, Georgia) - is expected to double by the year 2020. To be able to grasp that number one can look at today’s San Francisco, the fourth-largest city in California and the fourteenth-largest in the United States, with a 2005 population of 739,426 (Wikipedia: San Francisco, California).
